Drs. Clint Burnham, Paul Kingsbury, Alessandra Capperdoni and Calum Matheson are here to discuss their new book Lacan and the Environment (Palgrave 2021).
Clint Burnham is Professor of English and chair of the graduate program (English) at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, and president of the Lacan Salon. His recent books include Does the Internet have an Unconscious? Slavoj Žižek and Digital Culture (Bloomsbury, 2018) and Fredric Jameson and The Wolf of Wall Street (Bloomsbury, 2016).
Alessandra Capperdoni is lecturer in the Department of Humanities at Simon Fraser University, Canada, where she teaches literature, philoso- phy and critical thought, and animal studies. Her research explores desire, affect, trauma, and social imaginaries in three interrelated areas: the processual forms of language-oriented poetics and translation practices through the lens of the theories of the unconscious of Freud and Lacan, Marxist-inflected philosophies of language, poststructuralism and feminist theory; the work of literature and art in relation to violence and trauma; cultural work as phenomenological orientation toward the environment and other-than-human animals, engendering the possibility of social links with different worlds.
Paul Kingsbury is Professor of Geography, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Environment at Simon Fraser University, and Vice President of the Lacan Salon. His most recent scholarship draws on psychoanalysis in order to investigate the cultural geographies of paranormal investigations. He is the co-editor (with Steve Pile) of Psychoanalytic Geographies (2014) and (with Gavin Andrews and Robin Kearns) of Soundscapes of Wellbeing in Popular Music (2014).
Calum Matheson is Assistant Professor of Public Deliberation and Civic Life in the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh, director of the William Pitt Debating Union, and a candidate at the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Center. His work focuses on intersec- tions of Lacanian psychoanalysis, cultural studies, and rhetoric. He is author of Desiring the Bomb: Communication, Psychoanalysis, and the Atomic Age. His articles have been published in Quarterly Journal of Speech, Review of Communication, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Philosophy and Rhetoric, and other leading journals.
